Panama Canal
This political cartoon is about the Panama Canal. The cartoon shows
Teddy Roosevelt standing in front of what seems to be the man representing
Columbia. He is holding a bag of money which says 'Million Dollars for a Canal'
while choking the man of Columbia. The cartoonist's message is that Roosevelt
was dominating Columbia in order to annex the canal. The reason America wanted
this canal so bad was because it would connect us with the other countries that
we could possibly trade with. Some may say that Teddy Roosevelt went into
Columbia way to controlling which was not fare. While others may say that TR
did the right thing by getting the Panama Canal no matter what. The cartoonist
used labeling and symbolism to make this cartoon persuasive. He/she used
labeling on the Colombian man's shirt and symbolize when he/she put Uncle Sam
in the back of the cartoon. This proves my point that American Imperialism
could sometimes be a bad thing because its not right for America to go to other
nations or countries and take what we want.Works Cited
